George Fry
George Fry was an enthusiastic champion of fine craft and New Brunswick artists that earned him recognition both nationally and internationally. As Director of Crafts for the Province of New Brunswick, as well as Director of the New Brunswick College of Craft & Design, he served both organizations with distinction.
He was an influential figure in New Brunswick’s cultural life for over four decades, his artwork being housed in numerous collections such as the New Brunswick Museum, University of New Brunswick and Commonwealth Institute in London, England.

Fry’s support of Post-Impressionism was widely welcomed, but it sparked a backlash from some of England’s premier artists who felt he had devalued their work. This reaction was compounded by Fry’s criticism of John Singer Sargent – renowned for his paintings of American landscapes – who had become immensely successful through this movement.

Fry’s accomplishments and honors are extensive, with multiple awards recognizing his contributions to science and service. He is a member of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society; additionally, he was twice awarded with the Texas A&M Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award for Teaching and Administration.
He is a fellow of both the American Physical Society and Optical Society of America, as well as receiving the Texas A&M Foundation’s Partner in Philanthropy Faculty Award.
As a high-energy physicist, Fry made groundbreaking achievements in cosmic ray research and was instrumental in bringing world-renowned physicist Stephen Hawking to Texas A&M University. Additionally, he founded the annual Physics and Engineering Festival in 2002.
Personal Life
George Fried was an illustrious mariner who served in both the United States Navy and Merchant Marine. He is particularly remembered for saving the crews of British steamship Antinoe and Italian freighter Florida in 1926 while commanding SS President Roosevelt.
He made a name for himself as an accomplished composer, with his music featured in many TV shows such as “Star Trek,” “The Man from U.N.C.L.E,” and “Gilligan’s Island,” among others.
He married twice and had four children: Daniel, Jon, Deborah and Joshua. At 64 years old he passed away from congestive heart failure in Brooklyn, New York at the age of 64; he is survived by his wife.
