Professional Career

He joined EMI at a time when record companies were transitioning away from 78s and 45s, transitioning instead to magnetic tape as their main recording medium.

His mentor Oscar Preuss at Parlophone Records initially hired him to work on classical music repertoire; however, Martin quickly expanded this into jazz (Humphrey Lyttelton), comedy recordings and rock-n-roll when it reached Britain. His most successful comedy recordings were with Peter Ustinov and he became close friends with actor Spike Milligan.

Martin’s condescending demeanor may have contributed to some musicians’ distaste for him, but he always treated performers with respect and made it his mission to help them develop as artists. This dedication can be heard on recordings by Cilla Black, Shirley Bassey, and Gerry and The Pacemakers.
