George sandals was born a slave on Moses Carver’s farm near Diamond, Missouri. Within weeks after his birth, Confederate raiders kidnapped his parents and took them away to Kentucky, where they were sold as slaves. Eventually, the Carver clan settled in Polo, Missouri where George lived until 1887.
