George Swade, Former Head Football Coach at Harbor College

George Swade has been in the coaching profession for more than a decade, currently serving his third tenure as Harbor College’s head football coach after leading them to an impressive 9-0 start last year.

Early Life and Education

George Swade was born in Monessen, Pennsylvania as the oldest child of George Charles and Mary Pauline (Creevey) Swade.

His family includes his wife, Judith Currieri; sister Kathleen Mappas of Monessen, PA; and children Sandi Bowlus (Knoxville), Patty Beck (Orange, CA) and George Swade Jr. (Kenosha, WI).

He served as coach and athletic director at Bishop Montgomery High School for many years, leading them to multiple state championships that earned him induction into their Athletic Hall of Fame. Additionally, he had coaching stints at Harbor College and other institutions.

Professional Career

George Swade was a renowned football coach. Throughout his three decade tenure at Bishop Montgomery High School (BMHS), he won multiple state championships.

Swade was an active volunteer, founding the Lions All-Star Game to allow graduates from local high schools to play one more game. Additionally, he was a lifetime member of West Torrance Lions Club where he served as president and raised funds for two scholarships.

After serving as Harbor College’s head coach for three years, Swade has announced his resignation. His duties will now be handled by offensive coordinator Brett Peabody.

Achievements and Honors

Swade’s role at the London Science Museum included overseeing, managing and fundraising for the construction of an early mechanical calculating engine based on Charles Babbage’s original nineteenth century designs. This ambitious undertaking necessitated careful planning, meticulous research and a significant budget.

He is the author of an impressive number of publications, such as his four-volume set on computing history, an extensive bibliography and many scholarly articles. Among other awards he has earned an MBE for his services to engineering education and research and been made a fellow member by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers in UK; an accolade in recognition for setting new standards in mechanical engineering education and research.

Personal Life

George Swade was born on July 29th 1898 in Toledo, Ohio and lived until his passing on February 8th 1920. He had a distinguished career as both an engineer and educator as well as being an accomplished artist.

In his free time, he was an enthusiastic sports fan and enjoyed watching baseball, football, soccer, golf and tennis. Additionally, he was an active member in his community by volunteering for numerous organizations.

He served as athletic director at Bishop Montgomery High School and also coached at Harbor College.

His wife Judith supports his decision to coach at Harbor again, though he complains about the pay he receives for that job.

Net Worth

George Swade, a former football coach, served three distinct terms as head football coach at Harbor College and won back-to-back conference crowns in 1981 and 1982. He also worked as offensive coordinator for the Continental Football League’s Seattle affiliate and served as defensive recognition coach at Long Beach State. Furthermore, he served as athletic director at Bishop Montgomery High for many years and has been part of Torrance’s community for more than 50 years.

On November 19, 2022, George F. Swade passed away at 89 years of age and is survived by his wife Judith Currieri; sister Kathleen Mappas (Nick); and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the “George F. Swade Most Inspirational Player Award” scholarship fund being established for deserving players in the West Torrance Lion’s All Star Football Game.
