Jack Daniel’s real name was Jasper Newton Daniel and was born September 1850. He died from blood poisoning caused by an infection in his toe in 1911; leaving the distillery to his nephews; today it belongs to Brown-Forman Corporation.

Young Jack began working for Lynchburg preacher, grocer and distiller Dan Call. Call introduced Jack to Nearest Green who taught him the art of whiskey making.

After Emancipation, Daniel purchased Call’s distillery and renamed it Jack Daniel Distillery. Soon afterwards he joined forces with Green to form what is widely recognized as America’s first black master distillers – an alliance which endured for decades.
