John Bakewell is the Executive VP and CFO at Wright Medical Group NV. With over two decades of experience in the medical device industry, he has held senior executive roles at several rapid growth companies.

Bakewell has also held board director positions at Lantheus, ev3, Cyberonics and Zeos International. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in accounting from the University of Northern Iowa.

Early Life and Education

John Bakewell, born at Brailsford in Derbyshire in 1721 and passionate evangelist and preacher, became a Methodist after reading Boston’s Fourfold State at age eighteen. This led him to deepen his commitment to religious truths. In 1744 he moved to London as a Methodist missionary.

After several years at Greenwich Royal Park Academy, Dr. James Egan became his successor and spent much of his free time preaching for Wesleyans.

Bakewell and Brown’s designs in the early years were heavily influenced by late 19th-century French art, featuring large scale elements, lavish sculpture, and theatrically rusticated surfaces. While these features remained signature to their work until 1912, strong rectilinear compositional frames began to replace them.

John Bakewell’s sister Euphemia Bakewell was also an accomplished artist and teacher. She studied painting at the Pittsburgh School of Design before embarking on a journey to Paris for portrait painting, while teaching bookbinding as well. Unfortunately, Euphemia passed away from pernicious anemia on December 25, 1921.

Professional Career

John Bakewell has been a financial advisor for 13 years, currently employed at Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Inc in Dallas, Texas.

His career has included a variety of roles, such as chief financial officer for several companies. Furthermore, he has served on public and private company boards of directors.

Bakewell and his partner Arthur Brown formed the firm of Bakewell & Brown in 1905, which went on to design some notable buildings around San Francisco such as Coit Tower, Federal Building, War Memorial Opera House and Veteran’s Building, plus PG&E Building on Market Street.

Achievements and Honors

Bakewell traveled extensively throughout England to learn agricultural techniques, before returning home to his father’s 178-hectare (440-acre) farm at Dishley. Upon his father’s passing in 1760, he inherited the farm and immediately started developing innovative breeding techniques.

He created the Leicester sheep, which produced long, coarse wool as well as providing an abundant supply of meat. Additionally, he bred Longhorn cattle, Shire horses and the Small White pig.

He stood apart from his contemporaries by segregating male and female livestock, culling those with undesirable traits from the breeding population, and initiating the widespread practice of letting animals for stud.

He currently sits on the board of directors for Exact Sciences Corporation and Keystone Dental Inc. As a certified public accountant, he holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Northern Iowa.

Personal Life

Through his life, bakewell made an effort to make a positive impact on the world. He volunteered at Room in the Inn, at a hospital cancer ward and Atlanta Habitat for Humanity.

He was actively involved in several charities, such as the Atlanta Food Bank and Georgia Association of Nonprofit Organizations. These experiences fostered his sense of social responsibility and ultimately led him to discover his calling.

John Bakewell is an industry consultant to the medical technology sector. He currently serves as director of Exact Sciences Corporation and sits on the boards of Lantheus Holdings, Inc. and Interline Brands, Inc. Prior to that he served as Chief Financial Officer of Lantheus Holdings Inc. – a diagnostic medical imaging company – from June 2014 until December 2015. Prior to that he had also served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Regional Care Hospital Partners – an owner-operator of non-urban hospitals from January 2010 until December 2011.
