John Buniak
John Buniak was an accomplished accountant and passionate volunteer. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio and passed away on May 23, 2022.
He was a devout Ukrainian Catholic and founder of the Syracuse chapter of the Ukrainian American Youth Association, as well as serving as Scoutmaster in Plast Ukrainian Scouting Organization. Additionally, he held the office of president for the World Lemko Federation from 2000 until his passing in 2009.
Early Life and Education
John buniak was born in the village of Wysoczany, Ukraine and spent his early childhood there with his parents Maria and Vasyl before World War II forced them to flee to Europe. There he lived for several years in displaced persons camps throughout Austria and Bavaria before returning home.
He enjoyed reading and writing poetry in his free time. Additionally, he was an accomplished musician who played the oboe. Throughout his academic journey, he studied under various teachers before receiving a grant to attend Carnegie Mellon University.
He is survived by his wife, Effie Sereda Buniak; daughter Madeline Lydyniuk of Kelowna, BC; sons Ben and Joe from Rosthern, SK; grandchildren Joseph Pauli, Lil Buniak and twelve great-grandchildren; as well as nephews Harry Cisecki from Rosthern and Susan Buniak from Clifton Park, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice Saratoga Springs or Christ Community Reformed Church.
Personal Life
John Buniak is a retired farmer living in Wakaw, SK. Survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Effie; daughter Madeline (Harry) Lydyniuk of Kelowna, BC; sons Ben (Grace) from Rosthern, SK and Joe (Lil) of Dapp, AB; twelve grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Harry Cisecki from Rosthern; plus numerous nieces and nephews he has lost.
John was a staunch supporter of his family and church throughout his life. He also believed in individual freedom of choice and conscience. John was an immensely proud man who loved his family and friends dearly – he will be sorely missed by all.
