Hardaway grew up in the Binghampton neighborhood of shotgun houses on the east side of Memphis. He and his friend Merriweather bonded on the concrete basketball courts there as young boys.
He earned a scholarship to play basketball at the University of Memphis, now the University of Memphis State. He graduated with a 3.4 cumulative GPA.
