When John Kurlander was a student in school, he was taught to obey his superiors. He was also expected to leave lesson plans for substitute teachers. However, he did not follow these instructions. In addition, he did not keep the classroom clean and safe. The school committee decided to terminate Kurlander.

During the hearing, witnesses described him as insolent, loud and abusive. In one incident, he embarrassed a student who left the class for a violin lesson. Kurlander said he did not recall making any of the remarks alleged by the witnesses. As a result, he did not call them as witnesses, which he claimed was his right.

Several employees of the Steeltown organization complained about Kurlander’s behavior to the board of directors. Among the most serious charges were those related to incidents on March 20 and 21, 1978.
