John Langcuster – A Local Teacher and Community Leader
John Langcuster has achieved great success as both a local educator and community leader, enjoying a long and illustrious career in extension and community development. As an expert in this field, his knowledge and insight are highly valued by those within and outside the area.
He is a 2014 graduate of Madison Ridgeland Academy and 2018 graduate of the University of Alabama, having majored in political science and history. Currently, he works as a State Farm Aspirant.
John Langcuster was an accomplished athlete who received a four-year athletic scholarship to Troy State Teachers College, now Troy University. He remained loyal to the school throughout his life and generously contributed to both its academic and athletic programs. Additionally, John served on the Russellville Library Board and as member of City Council where he served two terms as Mayor pro tempore. Furthermore, John served as Civitan Club president.
After retiring from Troy University, he worked at the University of Missouri-Columbia as Program Director and Assistant Professor in Counseling Psychology. He served as an inspiring mentor and educator to many students, while volunteering his services to veterans suffering from physical or mental disabilities – aiding them with their transition back into civilian life.
Achievements and Honors
John Langcuster, a longtime Russellville resident and teacher, had an illustrious career as both. Additionally, he served as councilman and Mayor pro tempore of Russellville City and served on both boards: Russellville Library Board and Vice President of Russellville City School Board. A passionate community leader and volunteer, John served on both boards with distinction.
In 1953, he wed Suzanne Wages and would remain so for 63 years. Survived by his two sons Jim Langcuster (Beth) of Auburn and John Langcuster (Christy) of Ridgeland, Miss.; grandchildren Sarah Beth Langcuster (Mark Kleist), Maggie Langcuster (Alec Harris), Jackson Langcuster (Madeline), Caroline Suzanne and Grace Merrittt Langcuster; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, Jim will always remain close to his heart.
He was an ardent alumni of Troy State Teachers College, now Troy University. Throughout his life he remained involved with the college’s athletic program and supported both its academic and athletic initiatives. Additionally, his generous donations enabled the school to remain successful throughout its transition.
John is a proud member of Terrace Manor Nursing Home’s community. He is well known for his tireless work ethic, devotion and commitment to both patients and staff alike. Additionally, John has an excellent communication style which ensures all his patients remain contented.
John enjoys watching football and spending time with family and friends. He enjoys golfing as well as the occasional cocktail party or dinner for the ladies. John is a proud father of three boys and one girl; some of his most memorable moments include his wedding to Christy Vaughn Langcuster and the birth of their first child Jackson V Langcuster. John has an active church life as a devout Baptist. Additionally, John enjoys outdoor activities like camping or hiking in the past.
