John Moloio was an esteemed and beloved member of Stanford University Law School’s community. It was his mission to provide outstanding service and a warm environment for students, faculty and staff alike.

As director of the Robert Crown Law Library, he led an innovative and dedicated team. He was renowned for his work with digital reserves and was an outspoken proponent for open access to legal scholarship.

Early Life and Education

John Molio is an education advocate who believes that educational attainment is essential to realizing the American Dream. To this end, he has worked to make New York State Public Schools more efficient and to cement links between school systems and higher education institutions.

Lomio has explored many destinations around the world, from the Caribbean to South America and Antarctica. His passion for travel and environmental conservation have led him to spend time outdoors whenever possible.

In addition to his professional career, he has spent a great deal of time teaching in the classroom as a teacher. His enthusiasm and knack for encouraging students to get active and spend more time outdoors are testaments to his belief that these activities will make them healthier individuals who can contribute more positively to society overall. John Lomio was a beloved colleague to law students during his time as Director of Library at the law school from 2005-10. He prioritized service to the library community and earned praise for his expertise on legal research and digital reserves development. Both he and his staff received twice the Staff Appreciation Award from the law school, honoring excellence in law librarianship work.

In addition to his professional duties, he played a significant role in creating some of the library’s earliest online initiatives such as Women’s Legal History Biography Project that provides biographical chapters and archival information on hundreds of pioneering female lawyers in America. Furthermore, he helped launch Stanford Securities Class Action Clearinghouse–a database that contains detailed details regarding federal class action securities fraud cases–which provides detailed data pertaining to such claims.

Achievements and Honors

John Lomio was a veteran law library manager with more than three decades of experience under his belt. He was an advocate for his staff and an expert source on library technology, plus he had the uncanny knack of keeping colleagues calm. Outside the law library, John enjoyed watching Stanford women’s basketball and could often be found bicycling or working out at the gym on campus.

John Lomio was an incredible asset to Stanford Law School and its community. We will miss him, but his memory will live on.
