John McCalley is the frontman of country band Deer Tick. After sobrietying for one year, it has allowed him to calm down and unwind.
He has taken time off to be a father, which has only made him stronger as a musician. He looks forward to getting back on the road with his band and performing some more songs.
Early Life and Education
John McCalley was born in the United States and spent his early years in Boston. Afterward, he served 21 years in the Air Force.
In addition to his military career, he was also an ardent Catholic and member of the Knights of Columbus. Additionally, he volunteered as a leader for Boy Scouts of America, earning the rank of Eagle Scout.
This collection consists of negatives and corresponding contact prints depicting various Nantucket scenes and events during McCalley’s final years. Although the photographs are undated, they were likely taken during the 1960s or 1970s.
Professional Career
McCauley has made a lasting impact in sport, both on and off the ice. He was an NHL referee and director of officiating before being inducted into Canada Lacrosse Hall of Fame at just 17 years old – an incredible accomplishment!
He is also a law enforcement officer for the Eastlake Police Department and recently graduated from the FBI National Academy, an intense 10-week program in Quantico, Virginia for senior law enforcement officers from around the globe.

Achievements and Honors
McCauley, a Duntroon graduate and Air Chief Marshal since 1954, was knighted one year later for his service during World War II. As such, he was responsible for many major operations of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) throughout Southeast Asia and the North Pacific Ocean.
He served as Deputy Chief of the Air Staff from 1954 to 1957 and is credited with initiating a major redevelopment program at RAAF Base Darwin. Additionally, he held the office of Federal President for the Air Force Association.
At their 42nd annual awards ceremony, The International Regional Magazine Association (IRMA) revealed the top honorees in magazines across editorial, photography, art direction and design. New Mexico Magazine earned six gold awards (1st place), four silver and two bronze for its efforts in this prestigious category.

John McCauley was an accomplished singer-songwriter from Providence, Rhode Island. He gained notoriety as the lead singer of alt-rock band Deer Tick.
McCauley was renowned for his music, as well as being an ex-Air Force officer and pilot. With 21 years in the service, he earned the rank of lieutenant colonel.
McCauley took time away from the band to focus on his family life. He and Toni have two sons now.
He freely admits to having been an alcoholic, but that it wasn’t until he got sober that he was able to make wise decisions. Additionally, he felt apprehensive returning onstage after a year away.
