Early Life and Education
John Ranagan was born on July 9, 1991 in Yorktown, Maryland and is a member of the Class of 2021 at Johns Hopkins University where he plays lacrosse for the Blue Jays. Additionally, John works as an account executive at Cohesity – a leading provider of data and analytics to financial services firms around the world.
One of his career’s greatest accomplishments was earning All-Mid Atlantic Conference first team honors as a midfielder. Additionally, he contributed to Johns Hopkins’ remarkable 19-game winning streak by scoring 16 goals and providing seven assists – leading the conference in scoring despite not playing in the top half of the field. Furthermore, he collected 51 ground balls in one game and scored his most memorable game-winning goal ever!
Professional Career
Ranagan, a two-time All-American from Yorktown High School, has played seven seasons in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). In 2019, he earned recognition as NLL’s Teammate of the Year and led his team to its first-ever NLL World Championship in his third season with them.
Ranagan was an integral part of the Swarm’s successful season last season, providing a steadying presence in the locker room with his veteran voice. He played 49 games, scored 21 points (9G, 12A), collected 136 loose balls and caused 31 turnovers.
Ranagan has had an immense impact during his first season with the New York Riptide. His contributions were key components in their 2-1 record in exhibition games and he has been a positive veteran presence both on and off the field.
Achievements and Honors
The Riptide are relatively newcomers to the National Lacrosse League (NLL), and while their scores have made an impact, it will be their intangibles that make them standouts in years ahead. Ranagan has already demonstrated leadership on and off the field while also showing team spirit by giving back to his community and alma mater Towson University. His talents can be seen throughout both locker rooms and on the field alike!
One of his more significant achievements was winning the NLL’s best offensive player award for 2017 season and being named to its esteemed all-star roster. These achievements are among the reasons he was selected in the first place, and he’s already making a name for himself at Riptide Academy.
Personal Life
Ranagan hails from Yorktown, New York and was a two-time All-American for his high school lacrosse team. At Johns Hopkins University, he earned the same distinction.
Ranagan has achieved great success as a lacrosse player, but his personal life has not been without its difficulties. As the son of an ex-NYPD officer and with two siblings, he must cope with both family issues and personal difficulties.
Ranagan remains focused on helping the Blue Jays claim their first major victory of the season this Saturday against Virginia. It will be an historic moment for Hopkins, and Ranagan hopes to make it unforgettable by scoring the game-winning goal.
