John Reef – Florida’s Lost Treasure

John Reef State Park in Florida is one of Florida’s most beloved destinations, boasting Caribbean-clear water and vibrant coral. However, like so many marine habitats throughout Florida, John Reef is suffering from overdevelopment, pollution and irresponsible visitors who take bits of coral as souvenirs. Unfortunately, like other marine habitats there, its future looks grim; unfortunately it could be lost to destruction due to overdevelopment, pollution and careless visitors taking pieces as souvenirs.

State park employees and ocean conservation societies are doing their part to safeguard the John Reef. They strive to protect and restore coral populations, monitor water quality, educate visitors on how to minimize human impact on Florida’s fragile environment, and keep the reef healthy for years to come.

Early Life and Education

Reef is a children’s author who specializes in biographies, social histories, health books and descriptions of famous buildings and monuments. Her biographies of writers, scientists and African Americans include such renowned individuals as E.E. Cummings, Walt Whitman and Albert Einstein; additionally she writes about the lives of scientists such as Sigmund Freud and William Grant Still.

She has also written extensively about George Washington and his home at Mount Vernon. Additionally, her “Places in American History” series encompasses Arlington National Cemetery and Monticello – two acclaimed Virginia landmarks that she describes with clarity and visual flair, according to School Library Journal critic Susan Nemeth McCarthy. Additionally, she has chronicled many outstanding African American leaders from Benjamin Davis to Colin Powell through her books.

John Reef was a passionate nature defender who made Port Douglas his home and dedicated his life to safeguarding the Great Barrier Reef. Together with his wife Linda, he started a commercial fishing business but soon realized the detrimental effects humans were having on coral reefs.

He dedicated his life to reef research and eco-tourism, founding Undersea Explorer and Eye to Eye Marine Encounters. These businesses have furthered our understanding of reefs.

He and his wife were active participants in numerous philanthropic and environmental organizations, advocating for protection and preservation from their personal experience. He served on boards such as Trustees for Florida’s National Parks and was past president of Friends of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
