Early Life and Education

John was raised in a Catholic family with strong connections to the local bishop. From an early age, John harbored ambitions of becoming a priest.

He attended several schools, each designed to stimulate his intellectual needs, before eventually entering Harvard College at fifteen. Unfortunately, he had little patience for school and it took him some time to develop effective study habits.

He became increasingly convinced that subjective experience, intuition and affect were more fundamental to spiritual life than objective reflection and reason. Additionally, he recognized the power of art and liturgy in nurturing these human abilities.

Achievements and Honors

John has been involved in a range of community activities, serving on numerous boards. He finished his ten-year term as Trustee at Stanford University, serving the last five years as Vice-Chair. Additionally, John chairs the Board of Directors at Stanford Health Care and sits on Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford’s Board.

He has also demonstrated his dedication to public service by spearheading the John and Terry Levin Center for Public Service and Public Interest Law at Stanford Law School. With his wife Terry, he established this center to recognize outstanding lawyers who demonstrate an unwavering dedication to public service.

Personal Life

John has long been an advocate for economic justice and criminal justice reform. He has worked to free non-violent longtime inmates, providing them with second chances.

Former mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania – one of the poorest and most challenged communities – helped rebuild his town by engaging youth, creating jobs, and providing urban policy solutions to his residents.

John serves as the ranking member of the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry during the 117th Congress, where he is responsible for shaping policies that affect rural America’s agricultural economy, nutrition programs and quality of life. Additionally, he sits on Appropriations where he oversees federal funding. Throughout his time in Congress, John has introduced legislation to combat critical prescription drug shortages and make it easier for veterans to find jobs.
