Thornber is an esteemed scholar of comparative literature. Her research examines how literatures from East Asia and beyond depict complex interactions between people and their biophysical environments.

She is a Harvard University faculty member, Victor and William Fung Director of the Asia Center, Chair of Comparative Literature, Chair of Regional Studies East Asia and Interim Chair for Graduate Studies in Comparative Literature. Additionally she serves as Co-Chair (with Professor Jeremy Stein from Economics) of Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Study Group.

Early Life and Education

John Thornber was born in Rantoul, Illinois in 1872 and became an American botanist specializing in rangeland restoration. Additionally, he conducted research on grasses and cacti.

He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska and went on to work as a professor at the University of Arizona. Additionally, he was a research botanist with the Arizona Agricultural Experiment Station and an author.

He was an expert in rangeland restoration and plant identification. A member of both the Botanical Society America and Washington Academy Sciences, he also held the position of chairman for the Herbarium Committee at the University of Arizona. Additionally, he earned Fellowship status with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, receiving many honors from his peers. Furthermore, he belonged to Lambda Gamma Delta (an honorary agricultural judging fraternity), Pi Gamma Museum, and was a Mason.

Her fourth single-authored scholarly monograph, Gender Justice and Contemporary Asian Literatures, will be released in 2023 by Routledge.

Thornber earned the Harvard University Distinguished Teaching Prize and served on the Harvard University Asia Center Executive Committee, Department of Comparative Literature Executive Council, American Comparative Literature Association Conference Board, Provost’s Academic Leadership Forum and Conference Chair for ACLA Annual Meeting. She earned a doctorate from Columbia University.
