John Toki is an innovative Bay Area sculptor who creates monumental structures out of slag-like clay. By using this medium as his artistic canvas, Toki seamlessly fuses nature and humanity in these freestanding or wall-hung works.

He is a faculty member at California College of Arts & Crafts and has coauthored two ceramics textbooks. Additionally, he served as artist in residence at Mission Clay in Phoenix.

Early Life and Education

John Toki was born in the East Bay and developed an interest in ceramics during his teens. Since 1974, he has had his own art studio located in Richmond, California.

His artwork has been featured in exhibitions throughout the United States, the Netherlands and Japan. Additionally, he has completed public commissions and installations in Berkeley, Sacramento and San Francisco.

He has co-authored several textbooks, including Hands in Clay and Make It in Clay. He has taught at colleges throughout America. Nowadays, Toki resides in North Whitefield, Massachusetts with his wife and two children where he enjoys spending time working on commissioned pieces while gardening and caring for animals.
