Early Life and Education
On October 1679 in Lounovice (now Czechoslovakia), Jan Dismas Zelenka was born and baptised at the local Catholic church. His father – a kantor and organist – provided him with an early musical education.
After finishing his schooling, he entered a music college in Prague to study with John David Heinichen. With declining health in later years, Heinichen became increasingly dependent on assistant Zelenka; when Heinichen passed away in 1728, Zelenka was given full responsibility for the repertoire of the Catholic court church.
Zelenka also visited Vienna in 1716, 1717, 1718 and 1719 to study with Imperial Kapellmeister Johann Joseph Fux. This experience inspired Zelenka to return home inspired; his ‘divini composizioni’ from this period are amongst the most important works in Catholic liturgical repertoire today.
Jan Dismas Zelenka is one of the most beloved Czech composers of the Baroque era. His music stands out for its daring compositional structure and vibrant harmonic invention with intricate counterpoint.
He composed an impressive array of sacred vocal-instrumental works, such as masses, oratorios, requiems, Magnificats, Te Deum settings and litanies. Additionally he created virtuosic instrumental pieces like six trio sonatas, five capricci and several concerti.
After serving in Prague, Baron von Hartig recruited him to the court orchestra of Dresden (perhaps as a double bass player). It’s likely that living conditions in Dresden spurred his creativity; within months of moving there his salary had increased from 300 thalers to 350 thalers.
