Early Life and Education
Mystikal (real name Michael Tyler), was raised with love and discipline by his mother in New Orleans’ 12th Ward. Their mother encouraged both of her children to excel academically while avoiding drugs or criminality.
Mystikal’s debut album, 1994’s Mind of Mystikal, became an instant regional success and went on to sell tens of thousands of copies across the U.S. His subsequent releases of 1995’s Unpredictable and 1997’s Ghetto Fabulous cemented his status as a nationally known hip-hop emcee.
Mystikal has been arrested multiple times, most notably for allegedly sexually assaulting his hairstylist in 2004. Additionally, he was imprisoned for extortion and sexual battery and is serving time at Louisiana’s Elayn Hunt Correctional Center for these crimes and tax offenses. Mystikal stands out among his peers with his raspy, scream-like vocal intensity and signature rapping style – rival Cash Money Records rappers such as Busta Rhymes and U.N.L.V have even engaged in feuding rivalry over music production – setting him apart from them all.
Professional Career
Michael Lawrence Tyler aka Mystikal was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. After attending Cohen High School he enlisted in the military where he served during the Gulf War before transitioning into hip hop rapping career and eventually signing to Big Boy Records in 1994.
Mind of Mystikal was released in 1995 and enjoyed great success. Following this release came 1997’s Unpredictable album which solidified his place within the music industry.
However, his life took an abrupt turn for the worse in 2002 when he was charged with aggravated rape for forcing his hairstylist to perform sexual acts on him and two bodyguards. These charges were later dropped; he remains registered as a lifetime sexual offender in prison without bail.
Achievement and Honors
Mystikal was one of hip-hop’s breakthrough artists in the early 2000s, thanks to hits such as “Move Bitch” and “Danger (Been So Long).” His debut album “Let’s Get Ready,” released that same year, went multiplatinum.
Trouble ensued. He and two bodyguards allegedly threatened to turn in his former hairstylist to police for cashing $80,000 worth of checks from his bank account illegally, prompting six years in prison; upon release he also had to register as a sexual offender.
Now, Michael Lawrence Tyler faces charges of rape, false imprisonment and five drug offenses stemming from an incident in July at his Louisiana home. One charge, first-degree rape, carries an automatic life sentence while other allegations include domestic abuse battery via strangulation and simple robbery, criminal damage to property as well as possession of drugs.
Personal Life
Mystikal (real name Michael Lawrence Tyler), was raised in one of New Orleans’s most challenging areas and yet managed to escape drugs and crime with help from his strong family support system.
Started his musical career in the early 1990s by releasing several regional hits. However, his fame skyrocketed upon joining Master P’s No Limit Records in late 1996; eventually going on to release albums such as The Mind of Mystikal, Unpredictable and Ghetto Fabulous.
Mystikal was found guilty of sexual assault in 2004 and sentenced to six years of incarceration with registration as a sex offender. After his release from incarceration, Mystikal became an invaluable mentor for other upcoming local rappers; even dating music video vixen Karrine Steffans during this timeframe.
Net Worth
Mystikal’s net worth has seen exponential growth since he started working with music labels like Jive. Additionally, Mystikal made considerable profits through selling his songs and albums.
Mind of Mystikal garnered him considerable wealth upon its re-release, while Ghetto Fabulous helped increase his overall worth even further. Furthermore, he collaborated with artists like Sick the Shocker, OutKast, Nivea and Butch Cassidy for producing chart-topping hits that cemented their position at the top of charts worldwide.
