New Haven Register Sports Writers
New Haven Register sports writer Chip Malafronte died after a long battle with cancer. He was a 20-year veteran of the paper and Hearst Communications, and covered a wide variety of teams and sports in the New Haven area. During his career, he wrote about many topics, from the hiring of men’s basketball coach Scott Burrell and athletic director Jay Moran to the emergence of a new cancer pandemic.
In addition to being a newspaper columnist, Dave Solomon was a long-time member of the Connecticut sports scene. He was a native of the Bronx and graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1974. Before joining the New Haven Register in 1976, he was a sports editor for the Daily Campus and a writer for the Hartford Courant. His dedication to the profession earned him numerous honors, including membership in the Baseball Writers’ Association of America and Pro Football Writers of America. He was also awarded the Bill Keish Award for media service by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
