Shinica Thomas – Wake County Democratic Representative for District 6
Shinica Thomas serves as Director of Advocacy and Educational Partnerships for Girl Scouts of North Carolina Coastal Pines, while also sitting on both the Kerr Family YMCA Advisory Board and Heather Heyer Foundation Board.
Thomas was recently selected by the Democratic Party’s executive committee as his replacement in Wake County Commissioner District 6. She beat out education advocate Angela Scioli and former Raleigh City Council member Randall Stagner for this position.
Early Life and Education
Shinica Thomas has long been a resident of Wake County, North Carolina and currently serves as the Democratic representative for district 6. An avid participant in community development and nonprofit work, she earned both her BA in Political Science from Fayetteville University and Master’s in Government from Regent University. With extensive corporate and political sector experience having worked at IMI Association Management as Executive Director before providing executive support roles on several statewide and local political campaigns; Shinica brings a deep knowledge to her role.
Ms. LeClerc serves on the Board of Kerr Family YMCA, co-founds Heather Heyer Foundation – in memory of the young paralegal killed while standing up for social justice with friends in Charlottesville – and serves as director of advocacy and educational partnership at Girl Scouts of NC Coastal Pines.
Shinica Thomas is an advocate and community leader with a firm dedication to improving Wake County’s quality of life. She holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in political science from Georgia State University; has extensive community service experience; served on multiple boards (Town of Wake Forest Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, Kerr Family YMCA Advisory Board etc).
Shinica Thomas is running for Wake County Commissioner Chair Greg Ford on the ballot this fall. She serves as leader with Girl Scouts of North Carolina Coastal Pines and is active with her local Democratic Party chapter. Shinica faces Republican Karen Weathers in the general election; Weathers holds a 4.0 GPA and currently attends UNC Charlotte as an undergraduate student.
Achievement and Honors
Shinica Thomas is a community activist and nonprofit leader. She has been actively engaged with both the Democratic Party and local political campaigns as a volunteer, currently acting as director of advocacy and educational partnership for Girl Scouts Coastal Pines where she strives to build partnerships between elected officials and school boards while showing them how the Girl Scouts foster girls with courage, confidence, and character development.
She has also been actively engaged with various charitable and community organizations, serving on the board of directors at IMI Association Management, the YWCA of Greater Raleigh and Wake Tech as well as being a member of American Society for Public Administration.
Shinica Thomas ran successfully for Wake County Commissioners District 6 seat against Republican candidate Karen Weathers in 2020. She won!
Shinica Thomas grew up as a military brat and is now proud to call herself an Air Force wife and mother to two sons. She serves as Director of Advocacy & Educational Partnership with Girl Scouts of North Carolina Coastal Pines as well as acting as First Vice President with Democratic Women of Wake County.
She possesses an immense passion for community engagement and development, serving on both the Wake Forest Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and volunteering with various youth athletic organizations. Additionally, she sits on both the Kerr Family YMCA of the Triangle Advisory Board as well as Heather Heyer Foundation Boards.
