On Wednesdays at Asbury University, students typically gather in Hughes Auditorium for chapel. But this past Wednesday was different.
Asbury leadership considers this experience an extraordinary move of God. Some have called it revival; for their part, some referred to it as an extraordinary act of the Holy Spirit.
Early Life and Education
Thomas the tank engine was an imaginative, mischievous little engine who often got himself into scrapes – yet was always willing to give things another go and play his part in both the yard and on his branch line. He loved taking part in yard duties as much as on his own branch route!
Asbury developed an affinity for basketball early in his life and was inspired by excellent coaches such as Bill Weimar in Denver and Bill Strannigan at Wyoming. His competitive nature eventually led him to becoming a successful head coach at both Kansas State and Pepperdine; amassing an overall record of 238-215.
Thomas made one visit to Topridge last year using a private jet that stopped at Dulles before flying directly to an airport near the resort, where he met executives from Verizon, PricewaterhouseCoopers and various conservative think tanks.
Professional Career
Thomas Asbury is an experienced planner, having prepared master plans, zoning ordinances and special planning studies in over 120 municipalities. He received his Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning from Michigan State University as well as his Master of City and Regional Planning degrees.
Asbury has earned several prestigious honors throughout his career. The American Institute of Certified Planners recognized him with its Outstanding Planner of the Year award in 2007. Additionally, Asbury serves on both the New Jersey Planning Board and he was recently elected Vice Chairman.

Asbury was an accomplished author, producing articles, short stories, essays, plays, poetry and even an opera about Texas Revolution history. Additionally, his passion was history: he spent much of his time researching various aspects of Texas and American history.
Thomas Haley Asbury’s Hedgewood Farm served as a prominent center for Thoroughbred breeding events in Lexington for many years, and also played host to major races and breeding activities. Furthermore, Asbury was known for being a generous philanthropist.
Asbury University established the Associate Recognition Task Force in 2014 and established the Azzie Award (formerly GEMU). Honorees receive public recognition at LDI and receive an Azzy plaque in Asbury Support & Collaboration Center; there have now been over 200 Azzie recipients.

Asbury is an esteemed writer with an impressive career spanning broadcast and print journalism. He has served as a Fox News Channel commentator, hosted his own program on CBNC and written twice-weekly columns for hundreds of newspapers across the U.S.
After 15 seasons as basketball coach at Kansas State and Pepperdine, he amassed a 238-215 record – winning seven regular-season conference championships and making four trips to the NCAA Tournament.
Mr. White was a dedicated family man, survived by his wife and three daughters. Known for his competitive spirit, it showed when he led his Cowboys team to an upset victory against UCLA and Lew Alcindor in the 1967 NCAA Tournament.
