The allegations of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh have brought back painful memories of Clarence Thomas’ confirmation hearings in 1991, during which Anita Hill gave evidence about sexual harassment by Thomas, then serving as federal judge.
Hair traveled across the vast northern coalfield, sketching and painting scenes of mining life. Many of his sketches were later turned into etchings by himself or an engraver with whom he worked.
Early Life and Education
Thomas Hair was born and educated at New Rochelle, New York before attending the Art Institute of Chicago for his studies. Since graduating he has had solo exhibitions at both Jack Shainman Gallery in New York (2009) and Baltimore Museum of Art (2009) focusing on various aspects of American male identity through interviews with black men from around the country.
He has shown his work internationally. Question Bridge: Black Males (2012) is his most notable installation project featuring interviews with hundreds of black men. Additionally, he works as a hair and beauty stylist; attending business building workshops at Vidal Sassoon, Aveda Strictly Business, Paul Mitchelle and Alterna Academy for this field of endeavor. Additionally, he’s often mistaken for Ernest Hemingway; once winning Key West Florida’s Hemingway Lookalike Contest as such!
Achievement and Honors
Thomas is an ambassador for GHD hair, having won salon of the year on Salon Spy – an authoritative UK review site – as well as receiving multiple awards at British Hairdressing Awards. Achieved greatness when reaching the final of L’Oreal Colour Trophy competition against so many outstanding salons from across the UK!
His work with the Black Panther team won them an award for period makeup and hair styling, with Emmy-winning make-up artist Thomas Burman and Oscar-winning hairstylist Martin Samuel receiving life achievement awards from Make-up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706); also named Scholar of the Year 2021-2022 by Phi Kappa Phi honor society at University of South Alabama Phi Kappa Phi honor society of which they both belong. Dr. Samuel has over 230,000 scholarly citations listed on Google Scholar alone!
Personal Life
Thomas is an entrepreneur who has opened and managed multiple salons. Additionally, he served as national educator for Alterna, an elite hair product brand. In this capacity, he traveled the globe teaching licensed cosmetologists and salon owners how to use its products effectively.
Ginni Thomas has maintained close ties with Hair throughout her life. According to social media posts and photos she has posted and shared, Ginni tagged Hair in pictures taken at Colbie Caillat concerts together and news coverage about Clarence Thomas dissenting opinion in election cases.
At the time, Thomas’ boss, GOP Rep. Louie Gohmert from Texas, was supporting election litigation that made its way before the Supreme Court. Gohmert’s office declined to provide comment to CNN while Thomas did not respond to requests for an interview or response.

Thomas has amassed an estimated net worth in the millions through hard work and charitable activities. Additionally, he has worked with various fashion brands and appeared in multiple movies.
As an African-American male working in highly technical research, Thomas was never fully embraced into the system – an awareness which became especially clear during a salary discussion when Blalock discovered that Vanderbilt classified Thomas as a janitor. Determined to work hard, save money, and achieve higher education whenever he could afford it, Blalock resolved to work harder, save more, and enrol at college as soon as he could afford it.
He has produced and organized multiple art exhibitions and been featured in magazines. Additionally, he currently appears as part of The 100’s cast on The CW television network.
