His 18-year military career spanned Germany to Iraq. For his final assignment, he served at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan as a biomedical equipment technician; on September 4, he died due to a noncombat related incident near Bagram Air Base.

Tom began coaching wrestling in 1978 at Copiague High School before moving on to Half Hallow Hills East High. Since then, he has won over 200 dual meets and seven league championships, becoming a member of Suffolk County Wrestling Coaches Association as well as teaching health and wrestling at this school.
