Actors and Actresses in the Westside Story

Currently, there are several actors and actresses in Wilmington, NC, who are performing in the Westside Story. Among them are Ariana DeBose, Ansel Elgort, Brian d’Arcy James, Kevin Lee-y Green, Rachel Zegler, and David Alvarez.

Ariana DeBose

Whether you’re a fan of musical theater, or just love to see a good story come to life, you’re bound to enjoy Ariana DeBose. This North Carolina native has been a star on both the stage and screen. She’s won the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress, and was nominated for an Oscar. She’s also spoken openly about her sexuality and being Afro-Latina.

After spending a decade performing on the stage, Ariana DeBose is making her film debut. She has a few projects in the pipeline. One of them is a spy film called Argylle, which stars Samuel L. Jackson and Bryan Cranston.

Ansel Elgort

Despite the fact that it has been nearly 50 years since the last time West Side Story was adapted to the silver screen, the tale of two star-crossed lovers is still very much relevant today. The film is based on a 1957 Broadway musical and the music was composed by Leonard Bernstein.

She has also received the National Board of Review’s Best Actress award for her performance in the movie. In addition, she was nominated for the Metropolitan High School Theater award. In all, she has performed in numerous high school musicals, including Hairspray, Grease, Hairspray, The Music Man, and Hairspray.

David Alvarez

Until Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story opens in theaters tomorrow, you may not have heard of David Alvarez. But this young, Tony-winning actor is well-known for his portrayal of Billy Elliot on Broadway. In fact, Alvarez was just about to quit show business when he got a call to audition for the role.

Alvarez had been studying ballet since he was young, but he’d also studied philosophy at Case Western University. After a short stint in the US Army, he returned to performing. After a few years in Mexico, Alvarez returned to New York City and had opportunities to act. He won a Tony Award for his role in Billy Elliot the Musical when he was 14.

“West Side Story” is a musical, set in 1957 New York City. It features young love between two young lovers and a fierce rivalry between two rival gangs. Originally a gentle plea for tolerance, the story has since become a scathing criticism of racial stereotyping.

Mike Faist

Having originated the role of Connor Murphy in the hit musical Dear Evan Hansen, Mike Faist is starring in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story, which is set to be released in 2021. The film is set in New York City during 1957. It’s a retelling of the classic Romeo and Juliet story. It features the lead characters Tony (Ansel Elgort) and Maria (Rachel Zelgler) as star-crossed lovers. The film also features Ana Isabelle as Rosalia, Brian d’Arcy James as Officer Krupke and Corey Stoll as Lieutenant Schrank.

Brian d’Arcy James

The musical has been adapted for the screen by a team that includes Spielberg and Tony Kushner, a Pulitzer Prize winner and one of the playwrights behind West Side Story.

Kevin Lee-y Green

Founder of Techmoja Dance and Theater Company, Kevin Lee-Y Green, is a community arts educator and choreographer. Green’s dance work centers on the power of arts and healing in the community. He incorporates dance, music, puppetry and traditional folk arts into his work. He also uses theater to help guide the community through trauma and loss.

Kevin Lee-Y Green was born in Bolivia, North Carolina and graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Green has also been a member of the ballet company and dance studio in Greensboro, North Carolina. His work has been featured in a variety of productions, including “The Color Purple”, “Sister Act” and “Up the Down Staircase.” He auditioned for “The Lion King” on Broadway.
